Lothian is the beautiful Scottish region that lies between the Firth of Forth and the Lammermuir Hills. It comprises of West Lothian, Mid Lothian and East Lothian and the city of Edinburgh. The Scottish capital, Edinburgh, attracts the most tourists to the area, but the rest of the area's coast and countryside is also well worth a visit. If you plan a trip anywhere in this region you should have no trouble finding a Lothian hotel to suit your needs.

Often considered one of the prettiest cities in Europe, Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and characterised by its Medieval and Georgian architecture, stone tenements and its dramatic location. In fact, Edinburgh attracts over one million overseas visitors per year and with its exciting cultural scene, varied selection of attractions and the combination of world heritage architecture and modern buildings it is easy to see why.

A simple stroll around Edinburgh's atmospheric Old Town and Georgian New Town is an extremely pleasant way to spend a day, or you can take a tour from an open top bus. The city also has a number of world-class museums and galleries including Scotland's National Museum and five National galleries.

Edinburgh is host to a number of festivals, the most famous of which is the Edinburgh Festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors every year between July and September. The Edinburgh Festival is in fact a number of different events including the International Festival which features a programme of theatre and music and also the highlight of them all, the Edinburgh Fringe, which comprises of approximately one thousand eight hundred different comedy shows at over two hundred and fifty venues. The city also hosts an important film festival, a book festival, a Christmas festival and a science festival amongst others.

Eating and drinking opportunities abound in Edinburgh, with more restaurants per head of population than anywhere else in the UK, you will not be short of choice. From cocktail bars, to basement taverns, traditional pubs to rooftop cafes there's no shortage of drinking venues either.

For shopping, head to the West End for independent boutiques, or the New Town for high fashion designer shops. Or if you want to get away from the bustle you can head to the Prices Street Gardens, Royal Botanic garden, or Holyrood Park to relax in some open space and greenery.

If you really need to get away from the bustle of the city you can head to East, West or Midlothian for some time out. The East Lothian region is an area of rolling hills, secluded beaches and ancient ruins. Golf is also popular here and with the area enjoying more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Scotland, there is no better place for a relaxing stay.

Midlothian offers tranquil countryside with ancient ruins, historic days out, peaceful woodland and plenty of visitor attractions and activities on offer. It recently became world famous for the Rosslyn Chapel, the medieval building as seen in the Da Vinci Code movie.

West Lothian is another area of outstanding beauty and historic significance with scenic countryside and pretty villages on offer. Star Trek fans can even visit the James Doohan Memorial Exhibition at the Annet House Museum in Linlithgow, which tells the life story of the actor who played Scotty in the popular TV series.

Whatever part of the area you visit you will find that Lothian hotel choices are plentiful, especially in Edinburgh. All the hotels have comfortable rooms, some in historic settings, most with twenty-four hour concierge services, restaurants and amenities such as laundry and business services. You will also find hotels that offer cot effective family rooms and free parking. Some hotels have fitness centres and swimming pools for the exclusive use of guests. For functions and business there are hotels with banquet and conference facilities as well as Business centres and meeting rooms. Many hotels provide free Wi-Fi as well as fax and photocopying. With a little web research you will find the perfect Lothian hotel for your stay.

Whether you are visiting for one of Edinburgh's world-class festivals, or to enjoy the surrounding Scottish countryside Lothian is an area that will not disappoint.
